Jamaica Pouch
This handsome drawstring purse is knit in a spiral pattern that accentuates the self-striping yarn. Once you get into the rhythm, this bag works up fast; and no one but you will know how easy it was to knit!
MEASUREMENTS
Approximately 6.5" (16.5 cm) around and 7.5" (19 cm) tall
YARN

Katia, Jamaica, 100% cotton, 100 g (3.5 oz)/219 yds (200 m), Color 4010

NEEDLES
Set of US 6 (4 mm) double-point needles 8" (20 cm) long or longer and one US 6 (4 mm) circular needle 16" (40 cm) long (optional) or size you need to obtain correct gauge
GAUGE
28 stitches = 4" (10 cm) in pattern
OTHER SUPPLIES
One crochet hook size F/5 (4 mm), 1/4 yd fabric for lining, optional
Knitting the Base
Cast on 6 stitches tightly and place 2 on each of 3 double point needles. Place marker and join into a round, being careful not to twist stitches.

  • Round 1: *Kfb; repeat from *. You now have 12 stitches.
  • Round 2: *K1, kfb; repeat from *. You now have 18 stitches.
  • Round 3: *K2, kfb; repeat from *. You now have 24 stitches.
  • Round 4: *K3, kfb; repeat from *. You now have 30 stitches.
  • Round 5: *K4, kfb; repeat from *. You now have 36 stitches.
  • Round 6: *K5, kfb; repeat from *. You now have 42 stitches.
  • Round 7: *K6, kfb; repeat from *. You now have 48 stitches.


  • Continue in this manner, adding one knit stitch between increases in each round until you have 126 stitches.

  • Next Round: Knit.
  • Next Round: Purl.
  • Knitting the Pouch Sides
    Begin Circular Spiral Stitch and continue even until piece measures 6.5" (16.5 cm) from purl row.

  • Round 1: *K2, yo, K2, K2tog; repeat from *. Repeat Round 1 for pattern.
  • Knitting the Top of the Pouch
  • Next Round: Knit
  • Next Round: *K2, yo, k1; repeat from *.
  • Knit 4 rounds.
  • Bind off loosely.
  • Finishing
    With crochet hook, make two 20–28" (51–71 cm) chains. Thread through holes formed by yarnovers at top of pouch, beginning and ending each drawstring on opposite sides of the bag. Tie ends of drawstrings.

    Line if desired.
